Victory over Depression – Part II
By Renée Lubinski

In addition to last month’s teaching, there are other tangible ways you can victoriously defeat depression. Helping others out that are in despair is an excellent way.  Give of your time at the neighborhood food pantry distributing food to those in need. Help a widow who's incapacitated by cleaning her house. Visit an elderly person who can't see to read anymore and read the Bible aloud to him.  Do something, anything, to get your mind off yourself.

It is known in the medical world that people who are depressed have tunnel vision on themselves. They sit around thinking, Things aren't right for me. I'm not doing well. I'm falling short.  I'm failing. No one cares about me.  We would all be depressed if we thought about ourselves all the time. So it is important to get your mind off yourself and onto somebody else.

I truly believe that if you apply the Word as you’ve read in Part I and do these other things, you will see a great change in your state of mind. If you will keep the Word of God before your eyes and in your ears, if you'll believe it, speak it and act on it, and get your mind off yourself and on to serving others, you won't be able to stay depressed.

"But”, you may say, "I have a chemical imbalance that makes me depressed."  Then that's a sickness just like any other sickness. God has promised in His Word healing and you can lay hold of those healing promises today. I have compiled a list of Health and Healing Scriptures set to prayer that you may print off, if you’d like.

And please, do not misinterpret what I am saying. I am not telling you to refrain from seeing a physician. I'm instead exhorting you to get into the Word, fellowship with God and do what He leads you to do, by His Spirit within. He may lead you to a doctor who will be used as a pathway to your healing. But if that doctor prescribes prescription drugs, know that those drugs will not cure you. Anti-depressants are not designed to heal depression, just to control or mask the symptoms. So you'll still need to lay hold of your deliverance by looking to God’s Word, thus developing the ability to see yourself the way God sees you.

The stronger that “spirit of faith” becomes within you (spoken of in II Corinthians 4:13), the weaker the spirit of depression will be. Then one day that depression will cease. It could be instantaneous or it may take a process of time. Regardless, God will do it.  In its place will be great joy. The Bible calls it "joy unspeakable and full of glory."  This inner joy spoken of doesn’t fluctuate with circumstances or emotions. Rather, it’s a deep, inner delight in God that only the Holy Spirit can produce. This divine joy is more than medicine, it’s your strength! “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Neh. 8:10). The positive effects of joy reach the very perimeter of our countenance as Proverbs 15:13a says, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful.”

I’ve spoken a lot about what I consider to be the most vital treatment of all – taking in the Word. Now I would like to shift to some proven natural remedies in battling depression.

Vitamin B12 is shown to help depression.  A Finnish study recently monitored the levels of B12 in clinically depressed patients and found that the patients who responded best to treatment were those who had a higher concentration of the vitamin in their blood.  Higher B12 levels have been shown to reduce anxiety, confusion and an elevate mood.  Look for vitamin B12 in milk, eggs, low-fat meat and fortified cereals.

As well, in the treatment or prevention of depression it’s important to take a comprehensive multivitamin. This will reduce your risk of developing depression or seeing it progress.  But beware, most over-the-counter multi-vitamins lack optimal amounts of certain minerals and vitamins, and often times they are in a form that is virtually indigestible. Therefore, it is wise to pay a little more for a better grade vitamin. In researching I have found two quality choices online from trusted Christian physicians. You can request a free informative catalog. Here are their web sites for further information and ordering:

Dr. Reginald Cherry   OR   Dr. Don Colbert

Another depression treatment not to be overlooked is exercise. It is an excellent treatment not only for depression but also for insomnia, and of course, weight control.  According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a growing number of studies are showing that the mood-boosting effects of exercise may even fight clinical depression!  Researchers found that walking for 30 minutes each day quickly improved the patients symptoms faster, in fact, than antidepressant drugs typically do. Wow, that’s exciting!

The results indicate that, in selected patients with major depression, aerobic activity can produce a substantial improvement in symptoms in a short time. Previous studies have suggested that exercise is a potent mood booster, and some research indicates that for some patients regular activity may be a better depression treatment than psychotherapy or medication. Exactly why is unclear, but exercise does influence certain mood-related hormones. And it is also believed to enhance people's sense of control over their lives.  In one study that compared exercise with antidepressants among older adults, investigators found that physical activity was the more effective depression fighter.

When using exercise as a drug, it will be important to have as a goal at least 30 minutes per day, five - six days a week. Obviously, depending on one's current condition, you may need to work slowly up to this level. Consult your physician.

The practical problem with using exercise in depression is that the desire to pursue any activity is not very high. Taking the first step of confessing the Word of God over the depression will greatly increase your mindset and desire to exercise.

The converse also needs to be addressed. Just because one exercises, that does not mean you cannot become depressed. Exercise makes it easier to treat depression, but it certainly does not cure it in everyone.

You can fight back depression and its nature to strangle the abundant life Jesus purchased for you through His death on the cross.  Know that all forms of depression fall under God’s category of expertise. Believers are most assuredly of the “Light”, but sometimes the darkness around us can seep in. We as Christians at times may feel the darkness even though we are very much of the Light.  You can know with full assurance that your willingness to fellowship with God and take the initiatives spoken of in the midst of your difficulty, will usher forth the rays of His wonderful light, which supersedes all darkness!  “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world” (I Jn. 4:4).

Therefore, let’s take hold of the Light of God’s Word with ever-increasing fervency.  Square your shoulders back and raise your sword (the Word) to fight back. Lay hold of the vast storehouse that God’s Pharmacy supplies!
