Wisdom about Heart Health
By Renée Lubinski

The Bible tells us that God forgives all of our sins and heals all of our diseases (Ps 103:3).  Many diseases from which He longs to set us free from have their roots in high levels of LDL (or “bad”) cholesterol in the body.  Coronary heart disease is most often associated with this problem.

Heart disease accounts for approximately 500,000 deaths per year and an estimated 102.3 million American adults have cholesterol levels above 200, which is above normal, healthy level. Of this number, 41.3 million have a level of 240 and higher, which puts them at high risk for heart disease.

The reason that high cholesterol is so insidious is that it is known as a “silent killer.”  Many people have no idea that their cholesterol levels are elevated until they have them checked. According to Christian physician and author, Dr. Don Colbert, “There may be no outward sign in your body that you have high cholesterol, though you may be walking around with a “ticking time bomb” inside just waiting to go off. Prolonged elevated levels of cholesterol may eventually lead to plaque in the coronary arteries, which can block blood flow to the heart, causing a heart attack, or hamper blood flow to the brain, causing stroke.”

Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (KJV). With heart disease being the number one killer in the United States, and high cholesterol being one of the primary causes of heart disease, it is extremely important to have your cholesterol levels checked regularly.  Dr. Don Colbert suggests at least every five years after age twenty. Don’t let ignorance open the door to heart disease! Just because you can’t feel it doesn’t mean that it’s not there.

Gaining physical and spiritual refreshing and renewal requires careful wisdom from God. Godly wisdom is a vital key to restoration for your body, as Scripture affirms: “For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, but the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.”  Eccl 7:12 NKJ

Knowledge and godly wisdom is power.  One way that God’s people are destroyed for lack of knowledge is apparent in the case and facts of high cholesterol. But God has given us the tools we need to combat this silent killer. Knowledge, wisdom and discipline are all important:

♥ Knowledge to understand the necessary dietary changes

♥ Wisdom to make the right choices

♥ Discipline to follow through

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 3:16). Let’s not “trash” them by consuming fast foods, junk foods, excessive amounts of sugar and the wrong kinds of fats. The Bible says that we will reap what we sow (Gal. 6:7-8).  Many of us “sow” the bad seeds of overeating and lack of exercise and we reap a harvest of poor health and strained, weakened hearts.

I encourage you to have your cholesterol levels checked by your physician, and then begin to maintain a healthy lifestyle, planting good seeds so that you may reap a harvest of divine health and a life of vitality.

It also helps to educate yourself about good fats (Those HDL’s which your body needs for optimal health) verses the bad fats (LDL’s, which many Americans consume too much of). Log on to the Harvard School of Public Health to find out more!
