Know Before Saying No!
By Renée Lubinski

Now you might think I’m meddling but let’s face it, normal living today often times fails to keep us physically fit. Exercise is crucial. You may say, “I am way too busy to exercise! I don’t know where I’d ever find the time.”  Well, before you cut out exercise as a means to free up your time, you better think again. Here is what the research is showing about exercise:

  • Exercise increases your pulse rate as well as your feelings of vigor, which all translate into feeling relaxed throughout the remainder of your day.

  • Exercise releases endorphins, which are the body's natural pain killers. You’ll be less anxious, less stressed, and feel much better about yourself.

  • Exercise increases memory performance and it decreases the reaction time for simple tasks and cognition (i.e., interpretation and understanding).

  • Exercise enables you to resist disease and it slows down the aging process

Let’s look to the aging results of Biblical examples, such as Moses. He lived to be 120 years old and the Bible says he was strong, energetic, and his eyesight was excellent! (Deut. 34:7).  Joshua and Caleb were in their eighties and they were still leading battles and fighting troops.  Even Sarah was considered beautiful at an old age and bore a healthy son!

Each walked in strength and vigor. How did they do it?  I believe it was because they obeyed God’s laws and walked in divine health.  You too, can walk in divine health!  One tangible way to start is to become physically active.

And no, it’s not too late – it’s never too late!  If it has been some time since you’ve exercised, you can begin small. Take a walk around the block. The next day take a more brisk walk around that same block and increase slowly.

I’ll be first to admit, exercise is hard work.  When you exercise your flesh seems to scream out to you – “DON’T DO THIS TO ME!”  So why do it?  Well for me personally, I want to be like those Bible patriarchs of old, with a strong mind, body and spirit that function in serving God well into my senior years. I want to be the Grandma and even the great Grandma that dances at her Grandson’s wedding!

It really is worth crucifying that self-will and putting on those walking shoes, especially when the blessings of God put a spring in your step!  Malachi 4:2 says, “The sun of righteousness rises with healing in its wings -- you shall go forth leaping like calves from the stall.”  When was the last time you did a little leaping?  Sometimes in our enthusiasm to draw near to Christ, we forget that there’s a physical side to being spiritual!

So, be encouraged today to put on those sneakers and purposely take on some form of exercise. Take care of yourself because you matter to someone. Although caring for ones self may seem selfish, it’s actually a very giving act! If you love your family and friends, take time physically for yourself so that they will have you around for a very long time!

A point mentioned above is that exercise increases memory performance. Link onto Renee’s Recipes to check out a recipe and other lists of foods that enhance brain power!
