Stress Relief Do you live under the stress of deadlines or unrelenting pressure? Believe me, I understand. Stress happened to be one of the main triggers to an autoimmune disease I suffered from just a few years back. It began showing in my body well before the diagnosis! In addition to triggering disease, do you know that stress plays a major role in the symptoms of hormone-related mood swings? According leading physicians and nurses such as Dr. Don Colbert and Nurse Practitioner, Marcy Holmes, most of the symptoms of PMS, premenopause and menopause are related to stressed adrenal glands. A busy, stressed-out lifestyle can cause the body’s level of cortisol to become elevated. Higher levels of cortisol will lead to decreased levels of progesterone (a much needed hormone). Elevated cortisol levels can result in weight gain, memory loss, blood sugar changes, insomnia, irritability and depression. If stress is kept up over time, eventually the adrenal glands will get so worn out that a number of problems may develop, which may include chronic fatigue, low blood pressure, allergies, depression, low metabolic rate with cold hands and cold feet, and recurring infections. If you, like so many women, run a tight ship filled with the busyness of work, home, children, husband, church, ministry and social activities, a breakthrough is needed. It’s time to take time out to take proper care of you -- body, mind and spirit. Your natural tendencies to look out for everyone and everything but yourself isn’t healthy for you or your loved ones. You must guard against the dangers and find balance for all of you over the long-term. Here are six powerful, yet practical, stress-busting tips you can apply today: 1. Just say no! God wants you to “carefully guard and redeem the time” according to Ephesians 5:16. Therefore, you may need to “just say no!” In the Gospels we find even Jesus withdrawing from people to be alone with the Father. When we get too busy, what will we lose in the exchange? You know, don’t you? You may have fought the same battle – you end up losing the leisure of communing in God’s presence and soaking in His Word without distraction. The Bible says it’s those “little foxes that rob the vines.” 2. Take time to be alone with God as you pray and do some spiritual journaling. As you pray and journal, seek His help by praying according to God’s Word. Pray Scriptures such as Psalm 90:12, “Lord, teach me to number my days that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” 3. Take a good comprehensive vitamin and mineral supplement, daily. 4. No supplement is as important as adequate sleep, rest and relaxation. If nothing else, take time out one day a week for a Sabbath rest. Commit not to set your hand to work on this day, and just watch what unfolds. The Lord will create and provide for you supernatural timing and order! 5. Spare your words. When you go around confessing “I’m stressed”, this gives the enemy a foothold, and Mark 11:23 says, “You will have whatever you say.” There is wisdom found in Proverbs 17:27 as well, “He who has knowledge spares his words and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.” Instead of negative confession, learn to confess the Word of God. Scriptures such as “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, will benefit you and others so much more! 6. Exercise. Even just four times a week goes a long way. Research reveals that regular exercise will actually cause you to be less anxious and less stressed. You’ll feel much better about yourself overall.
